Favorite music video
There were many music videos to choose from however this was the one that caught my interest the most and inspired me to be more artistic.
DITTO - New Jeans (2022)
Ditto is a song by the group new jeans, directed by Shin Woo-seok explaining the relationship between idols and fans. The MV has two parts, side A and side B, explaining both adolescence and personal growth.
The color palette of the whole music video includes mostly blues and dull colors indicating isolation and sadness. The locations of the mv also fit the theme with a rainy weather and a school background theme. Nostalgic soft glow effect added a dreamy aesthetic that went along with the concept well as it explained dependance on celebs for ones happiness.
Along with the narrative the visually appealing color grading is also one of my most favorite features of this music video, the smooth highlights, cool tones, Desaturated colors and earthly colors make the mv more attractive to the eye. The music video also incorporates dancing very well along with individual aesthetic shots with deeper meanings. One scene that caught my eye in particular was the use of a deer which symbolised the process of the main characters recovery and self-discovery. It first appeared in what seemed to be her dream or subconscious where she stood all alone in a massive endless snowfield which represented the fantastical yet lonely world of an idol.
The second time she faced the deer, it had walked away which showed she was finally letting go of her innocence and delusions and decided to face her reality moving on. The deer became an important symbol in the mv thus becoming a very artistic and appealing factor for me. The use of fast paced editing to juxtapose the reality and delusion was also a very clever way of expressing the main character's lack of awareness outside her personal bubble.
this showed that sometimes, as fans, one can feel the harsh criticism or judging gaze of others. To others, idols are just something that is intangible and fantastical. The music video showed that the girls of New Jeans may potentially just be a figment of the 6th girl’s imagination. Everyone in class stares at her weirdly as she films thin air. This made the mv both visually appealing and conceptually interesting.
