-how did your research inform your products and the way they
use or challenge conventions?
we did a lot of research before finalizing our music video
starting with brainstorming ideas and sharing concepts. We made a joint
pinterest board to help sort ideas better as well as keeping up to date with my
partner’s preferences. Our initial music video inspirations were different as
we were planning on filming for deceptacon and its genre was completely
different from our final product. However after researching again we decided to
choose ‘escapism’ by RAYE and ‘still don’t know my name’ by labyrinth as they
included a lot of the colors we were planning on using, the bright purples neon’s
and cinematic shots gave us an overall mind map for things we wanted to portray
in our music video. We used more conventional ways of shooting pop genre music
videos like including glamour and bright colors with decorated set designs,
extravagant costumes, and unique styling choices to keep up with our artists
brand image. We tried to incorporate this with different makeup looks like
flashy glitters and heavy eye makeup as well as repeated use of visually
attractive backdrops (we used the TV as our background). To make it more pop
aesthetic we also included dance segments to engage the audience more and make
the music video fun. Moreover in relation to editing, I kept the tempo of the
music video fast paced with quick cuts. Since the average attention span has
reduced from an estimate 2 minutes to 47 seconds, I tried to include montages
after every chorus to keep the energy balanced and avoid repetition so that the
audience does not get bored or loses interest. Thus researching into older pop
music videos like escapism gave me a good walkthrough on what I wanted to film
and HOW I wanted to edit it. The way the colors were integrated in that music
video and the pace of editing gave me a broader creative path to edit so I kept
the vfx minimal and the color palette in mind along the way.
